Department of Computer Science
Students presented in OAPS this year are very outstanding. Their research
output is a witness of their strong academic strength and enthusiasm in research:
Student: Winson Yick-sau LI; Supervisor: Dr. Ricky Wing-kwong CHAN
Winson Yick-sau LI has designed an interesting solution to address the poor
performance problem of executing JavaScript functions on slow handheld
devices through selectively outsourcing the function executions. Winson is
highly self-motivated in sharpening and analyzing the technical problems,
exploring solution alternatives, and evaluating the feasibility of his solution. He
has published and presented this solution at an international peer-reviewed
workshop. His personal attributes are well demonstrated by the results of this
project.
Student: Allen Hiu-lung LIM; Supervisor: Dr. Sam Tsz-hin NG
Allen Hiu-lung LIM developed iLifeMemo, a mobile application that facilitates
users to review their living in the past. The idea behind is to automatically keep
track of the places visited by the users at different times. With such information,
this tool is useful in automating the process of users writing diaries, reviewing
their personal memories, and even discovering collective memory among
groups of users. This is an outstanding project demonstrating Allen’s strong
creativity, technical sense and problem solving skills.
Student: Ho-leung MOK; Supervisor: Dr. Ted Chi-yin CHOW
Ho-leung MOK has developed iLiveCast, a mobile live video broadcast
application for Apple iOS. iLiveCast uses an innovative and scalable framework
to allow users to upload live videos to the server by“one click” and other users
to watch the videos anywhere. It also archives and indexes the videos at the
server. iLiveCast is seamlessly integrated with Google Maps and incorporates
many important features, including location-based search, location-based
recommendation, user rating, and social tagging. The innovation of iLiveCast
has received recognition in several prestigious competitions, including the
Silver Award of HKICT Awards 2013: Best Innovation & Research (College
& Undergraduates), the Gold Award of the 7th Amway Pan-Pearl River Delta
Region Universities IT Project Competition 2012, the Merit Prize of APICTA
Awards 2012: Tertiary Student Project, and the Merit Prize of HKEIA Innovation
& Technology Project Competition Award 2012.
