researchers has used, then proposed to use fake characters and pictures of
rare objects in examining whether people rely on sound, meaning, or shape
in recognizing Chinese characters. In a series of priming experiments using
the eye-tracking method, Ka-yuen intended to test by tracking how people
move their eyes in reading, how people make use of pictures or other means
to recognize made-up characters that seem very likely to be real Chinese. It
is proposed that there may be some preferential pattern by native speakers
in character recognition. Such findings would shed lights on strategies that
Chinese speakers use in character processing as well as in lexical decision.
